APRIL 2026 – Record breaking sustained cold temperatures this winter resulted in significant electricity price spikes in the Northeast. Near record demand, coupled with the resulting volatility in the energy markets, drove pricing to levels not seen before. This situation, in combination with existing problems, resulted in significantly higher electricity and gas bills this winter.
In the Northeast, prior to the arrival of record cold weather, existing problems include: rising electricity demand, phase out of dependable natural gas fired generation plants and an aging electricity transmission grid. These problems were “magnified” leading to outrageous pricing. Transition to renewable energy sources has its problems, specifically, lack of electricity generation during winter months. Here in New York state, policy is such that we will continue to experience volatility in the years to come.
Our recommendation is for businesses to sign 24 or 36 month supply contracts designed to avoid seasonal price spikes.
